About the Work
The staged vocal work El Cimarrón was composed during Hans Werner Henze’s stay in Cuba between 1969 and 1970. It is a unique contribution to the tradition of politically engaged music in Germany. The work combines a personal story of liberation with universal questions of oppression and resistance, creating an entirely new form of musical storytelling that extends far beyond conventional concert formats.
Nicholas Isherwood is regarded as one of the world’s leading interpreters of contemporary vocal music. He has performed El Cimarrónseveral times in the presence of the composer himself.
